Years ago, I had an experience with Richard Branson on his private island that changed my life—and how I approached business—forever.
That day, he chose an activity for me: sailing.
Now, I’ll be honest—I didn’t want to go. I didn’t know what I was doing, and I was scared. But I went anyway.
As I struggled to navigate the boat, I ended up falling into the water. What I didn’t know was that Richard had expected this to happen.
And here’s the lesson he taught me:
First, no one could help me because I had to figure out how far I could go on my own.
I had to face the fear, the discomfort, and the unknown without a safety net.
Second, when I reached my limit, I could ask for help—but even then, no one would rescue me.
Instead, they guided me just enough so I could rescue myself.

The Decision That Changed Everything

Over 15 years ago, I took a leap.
I was a teacher—a job I genuinely enjoyed—but deep down, I knew it wasn’t everything I was made for.
I’ve always craved culture, travel, freedom, and big adventure.
Working bell to bell in a classroom? That wasn’t the dream.
So, I did something most people would never consider—especially not a young professional with a wife and small kids.
I asked for a sabbatical.
I told the superintendent, “I know teachers don’t get sabbaticals. But I need to take one—paid or not.”
And to my surprise, he said yes.
That decision changed everything.
Suddenly, I had two powerful forces pushing me forward:

I got a call to lead a team of 300 people on a mission trip to Joplin, Missouri, right after the devastating tornado.
I said yes.
And the participants’ fees? They ended up covering my entire annual teaching salary—in just one week.
It was eye-opening.
But also, uncertain. There was no promise I’d get that opportunity again.
It was risky.
